Folkestone seafront - development newsThe consultation carried out in 2010 into Terry Farrell and Partners' new proposals for the development attracted particpation from well over 3000 people. 72% of respondents approved the main design principles: to revitalise the harbour as a lively vibrant quayside, to reconnect the seafront with the town centre and to reinforce the varied landscape character of the area.
Suggestions were also invited from contributors to the consultation, and many of these have either been incorporated into the planning process or in some cases have been implemented. A stunning new water feature was completed in Harbour Square in spring 2011, and became an instant hit with residents and visitors. Many of the artworks that comprised the 2011 Folkestone Triennial were located in the harbour and seafront areas, helping to animate the area. It is hoped that some of these will remain on permanent display. Other major arts and sports events also took place during recent months, including the Skabour Festival and the British Powerboat Racing Championships.
The Folkestone Harbour Company is pleased to support Folkestone Town Centre Management and its partners in planning the Folkestone Festival of Festivals in summer 2012. Further plans include the creation of water sports and sea sports centres on Folkestone seafront, both of which proposals were well supported during the consultation process.
